Yōshinkan Kendo has been training in the Wellington region for 25 years. Together, we seek to cultivate ourselves and build community through dedicated training, rigorous exercise and a focus on the fundamentals of good Kendo.
We train three times a week at various locations around Wellington City Centre, and our door is always open to beginners and visiting Kenshi alike. If you’re considering trying it out, we hold several beginners courses every year which are a great opportunity to join others exploring Kendo for the first time.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced Kendoka, we invite you to follow in the footsteps of the Samurai, and join us on the Way of the Sword. Find out more and get in touch by visiting our website. -

KENDO
-
Canterbury Kendo Club was established in 1988 and was the first kendo club formed in the South Island. Originally established as Sei Tou Ken Yu Kai, the club has strong links to Japan and more than 35 years of experience developing kenshi in Christchurch.
We welcome everyone from complete beginners through to experienced practitioners. Training emphasises strong fundamentals, reigi, challenging keiko and helping one another improve. Members can pursue kendo for personal development, grading, competition, fitness and friendship.
Canterbury has a proud history of developing kenshi who have represented New Zealand at World Kendo Championships and other international events. The club has also remained a strong part of the Christchurch kendo community through considerable change, including rebuilding after the Canterbury earthquakes.
Our long-standing motto is Nana Korobi Ya Oki - “Fall down seven times, rise up eight times.” It reflects the persistence, humility and resilience that we aim to bring to both our kendo and our dojo community.
Beginners are always welcome. Come along and give kendo a try.
