Jodo
杖道
What is Jodo?
Jodo is a traditional Japanese martial art that uses the jo, a short wooden staff, to confront an opponent armed with a sword.
Originating in the early Edo period, it is practised through paired kata in which the jo practitioner learns to control distance, timing, and angle to neutralise attacks with precision and composure. The movements are direct and efficient, emphasising adaptability and the ability to respond calmly under pressure. As with other budo, jodo is not simply about technique, but about cultivating awareness, discipline, and mutual respect through structured practice.
