What is Iaido?

Iaido is a Japanese martial art focused on the drawing, cutting, and resheathing of the sword, rooted in the classical traditions of the samurai.

Unlike the more combative exchange seen in other arts, iaido is practised primarily through solo kata, in which practitioners respond to imagined opponents with controlled, precise movements. The emphasis lies in posture, timing, awareness, and a composed state of mind, with each action performed deliberately and without excess. Through repetitive practice, iaido cultivates calmness under pressure, attention to detail, and a heightened sense of presence, making it a discipline as much about inner development as technical skill.
