Rules for shiai

Shiai Training in Nelson Camp (developed by Terry Takamine, any questions please email Terry at terry.takamine@nelsonpine.co.nz)

Nelson Kendo Club will organize Kendo Gassyuku in Waitangi weekend and is planning following Shiai Training on Sunday

1. Shiai Training by the whole members (Sunday afternoon)

1-1) Summary

New Zealand Kendo players need more experience to practice with other dojo players. The purpose of this training is to make a lot chances to have a shiai with many players, though shiai time is short. Also world championship of Kendo will be held in the next year. We hope this training is good opportunity to have a lot of shiai for the candidates.

1-2) Rule

  • Shiai time: Two minutes of Ippon shoubu (one point match).
    • Develop the motivation to get Ippon first. Short shiai time will bring quick decision and initiative. The main purpose of short time is to make a lot chance for everybody.
  • Group: The first group will be decided by a draw. That will be shuffled (See 1-4).
    • The number of groups depends on the number of people. Four or Five people in one group may be the best.
  • Sequence of shiai: A player who wins continues shiai. If he or she losses, winner stays and tries the next shiai. If who win against everybody in the group, he or she leaves.
    • The candidates of world championship can have a lot of chances of shiai, also Kyu grade people can have a good opportunity to practice with dan grade.
  • Regulation: The basic regulation is the same as normal shiai except for Jyogai (out of court). Shinpan should decide where is the borderline between outside and inside of the court, but do not give penalty because player cannot realize where is the borderline.
  • Shinpan: Nishin (two shinpans of main and sub). Both of shinpans may raise flag for the Ippon (See 1-3).

1-3) Shinpan

Instructors who are more than 5th dan and main instructors in some dojos will be coordinator of the group. Coordinator can decide the order of shiai and be Syusin (main referee). One 1st – 4th dan player is Fukushin (subreferee). They can learn shinpan in this chance. One other player in the group is time keeper. They also can learn about timekeeper in this chance. Shinpan instructs the manner of shiai for the beginners as well.

1-4) Shuffling

The timing of closing the first group will be announced approx 20minutes after starting this shiai training. Then members will shuffle. Please see the following example. We will continue this training three or four times;

1. Shiai Training by the best members (Monday morning)

Summary

1.1. Two teams will be made. One is “Team South Island” and another is “Team North Island”. Shiai coordinators in the groups will select seven players they shows the wonderful performance from South Island and North Island.

Rule

2. Members may be as follows.

2.1. 1st (Senpou) Women’s Kyu grade

2.2. 2nd (Jihou) Men’s Kyu grade

2.3. 3rd (Gosyou) Women’s dan grade (Less than or equal to third dan)

2.4. 4th (Tyuken) Men’s dan grade (Less than or equal to third dan)

2.5. 5th (Sansyou) Men’s dan grade (Less than or equal to third dan)

2.6. 6th (Fukusyou) Advanced (Anyone)

2.7. 7th (Taisyou) Advanced (Anyone)

2.8. Shiai time: 5 minutes. If even point, unlimited extra time (Encho) until one side gets ippon.

3. Special rule

3.1. Basically the rule is the same as normal shiai but following is the special rules.

3.2. Timeout system: Coordinators also select team manager (Captain) for each team. They can take timeout when they think a player needs instruction during shiai. Some young players said “even if instructors advise players after shiai, it is too late because if I lose, I don’t have a chance to show my performance after the instruction” after National Championship and Rembuden Taikai. Train imagination of players and instructors for tactics or strategy by this rule.

3.3. Timeout

3.3.1. The number of chance: One time in one shiai for each team. When one side takes timeout, another team manager also can instruct player.

3.3.2. Time of timeout: 15 seconds.

3.3.3. Take timeout: When team manager want to take timeout, he asks time keeper to take it. Time keeper call “Timeout!” and let Syushin know timeout with raising yellow flag.

3.4. Shinpan’s responsibility: Syushin call “Yame!” and stop the shiai. Syushin’s movement of timeout is the same as “Gougi” but call “Timeout”. Syushin checks 15 seconds by his or her watch.

3.5. Cheering: Audience can cheer player but cannot instruct. Normally cheering of Kendo is only clapping. But in Nelson Camp, audience can cheer shiai. If cheering encourages the player, he or she can show the best performance. This exciting experience is very valuable. If audience’s cheering is like the bird or coarse word, Shinpan can give penalty to the player.

3.6. No draw: This is team competition but there is no draw, so that team manager cannot instruct for the aim of draw. They have to advise in order to win.

4. Commendation

4.1. MVP: Masters will select

4.2. MIP (Most impressive player): audience will vote.
